Warm air naturally rises in a home exiting through the attic’s roof vents. This upward movement of air creates a vacuum known as the “stack effect” on the lowest level slab or crawlspace pulling in water vapor and potentially harmful soil gases. 

 A properly designed and installed moisture reduction system will draw out the damp moist air and other VOCS from the soil before they can infiltrate the home. Less humidity can mean decreased dehumidifier usage. In addition, HVAC systems also run less frequently. Decreased demand for energy-hungry dehumidifiers and HVAC systems translates to less wear and tear and lower electric bills.

 Per an E.P.A study fan driven sub-slab depressurization systems can pull in the neighborhood of 20 gallons of water away from the home a day. Lower basement humidity has many health benefits including fresher indoor air and the elimination of musty odors. Decreased relative humidity levels in the basement means reduced fungal mold growth, mildew and dust that can aggravate allergies and other lung conditions.

An unintended but certainly welcome byproduct of installing an active moisture reduction system (A.M.R.) is the reduction of soil gases such as Radon Gas. E.P.A. studies have shown significant reductions in basement soil gas levels when depressurizing the area beneath the slab or crawlspace, so not only will you be improving the indoor air quality with a drier living space, but you will also be drawing out dangerous soil gases from your home which is pretty cool!
